Brahmans by the Beach: The Great Northern Brahman Sale Story
There is something different about a cattle sale in the Whitsundays.
It’s where the cattle industry meets a landscape better known for turquoise waters, tropical islands and holidaymakers. But every October, the cattle trucks roll in, the Proserpine Showgrounds come alive and some of Queensland’s leading Brahman breeders, buyers and industry professionals head to the Whitsundays for an event that has quickly become an important date on the annual Brahman sale calendar.
Now entering its seventh year, the Great Northern Brahman Sale has grown from a shared vision between a group of Queensland Brahman breeders into an established annual event attracting buyers from across the state and beyond.
How it all began
In 2017, five Brahman breeders jointly purchased NCC Dienka for $45,000 – at the time a record price for a red Brahman female. That purchase created a shared genetic connection and, more importantly, sparked the idea for the Great Northern Brahman Sale – with the first sale taking place at Proserpine Showgrounds in 2020.

Now, the sale brings together seven family-owned Brahman operations from across Central and North Queensland, united by a common goal: to breed functional, commercially relevant cattle while continuing to push the quality of Australian Brahman genetics forward.
Over the years, the offering has evolved. Red Brahman cattle have been joined by grey genetics, elite females and sought-after semen packages, creating a sale that caters to both stud breeders chasing their next genetic opportunity and commercial producers looking for practical, productive cattle.
More than a cattle sale
Being held in the Whitsundays, the Sale provides a unique backdrop.
On Thursday evening, breeders, buyers and industry representatives gather at the Airlie Beach Hotel for the Heifer and Genetics Sale. The following morning, attention turns to the Proserpine Showgrounds for the Bull Sale.
It is the combination of the two sales, and its location, that has become part of the event’s appeal — the ability to purchase breed-leading genetics, tied in with an experience that is distinctly found in the tropical North.

It also provides the chance to catch up with friends and clients alike, talk cattle, build relationships and enjoy a few days in one of Queensland’s most iconic regions.
Built for the industry
Behind the relaxed setting is an offering that continues to develop in line with the needs of the industry, offering cattle selected not just for appearance or pedigree, but for the traits that influence the productivity and profitability of a herd.
Fertility. Carcase quality. Temperament. Growth. Feed efficiency. Longevity.
For the stud breeder, there are opportunities to access elite bloodlines and genetics that can influence a herd for generations.
For the commercial producer, there are bulls bred with practical performance in mind.
The 2024 Great Northern Bull and Heifer Sale
A sale that keeps growing
The growth of the Great Northern Brahman Sale has been reflected in both the quality and demand for the cattle presented.
In 2025, the sale offered 159 lots across its two-day format and achieved a total clearance of 98.7 per cent, with a combined gross of $960,550. The top-priced bull sold for $62,500, while the top heifer reached $26,000 and the top semen package sold for $5,000 per straw.
In 2026, the Sale will take place from 22-23 October with over 100 lots of red and grey brahman bulls, heifers and genetics up for auction. Exciting offerings at this years’ sale include the first release of semen in NCC Municipal (PS), two heifers with full imported Hudgins bloodlines, the first daughter out of JK Monte Cristo (PS), who sold for $70,000 at the 2023 Great Northern Brahman Sale, and the first and only 2026 semen release of Mr US Polled Fusion 711/9 (PS).
While the catalogue changes year on year, the philosophy behind the sale remains the same – focusing on the fundamentals that have always mattered; good cattle, good people, and good relationships.
Every October, the north becomes a meeting place for people who share a passion for cattle and a vision for the future. The cattle may be the reason they come. But the people, the relationships and the experience are what keep them coming back.
